A property of data indicating the extent to which their unauthorised disclosure could be prejudicial or harmful to the interest of the source or other relevant parties.
Confidentiality refers to a property of data with respect to whether, for example, they are public or their disclosure is subject to restrictions. For instance, data allowing the identification of a physical or legal person, either directly or indirectly, may be characterised as confidential according to the relevant national or international legislation. Unauthorised disclosure of data that are restricted or confidential is not permitted and even legislative measures or other formal provisions may be used to prevent disclosure. Often, there are procedures in place to prevent disclosure of restricted or confidential data, including rules applying to staff, aggregation rules when disseminating data, provision of unit records, etc. Sensitivity (of information) is sometimes used as a synonym to confidentiality. This concept can be broken down into: Confidentiality - policy; Confidentiality - status; Confidentiality - data treatment.
